Originally from Newark, New Jersey, Roseal Fowlkes, aka “DJ Master T” has claimed the Washington, DC metropolitan area as home for the last twenty-eight years after retiring from the United States Air Force.  Having had a deep appreciation of music dating back to 1977, DJ Master T quickly became inspired to pursue his passion for music and become a deejay after experiencing performances by some of New York City’s finest professional deejays (i.e., Tony Humphrey, Merlin Bob, Larry Levan, Steve “Silk” Hurley).  He spent numerous hours refining the skill of keeping the dance floor alive by experimenting with various techniques of mixing and scratching and participating in listening sessions at local radio stations.

DJ Master T’s musical journey began at age thirteen entertaining family and friends at various functions.  In 1981, he received his first professional gig playing oldies-but-goodies on Sunday afternoons in a club named Ronnie’s in Newark, New Jersey.  A couple of months later, Ronnie’s management added Friday and Saturday nights making him a regular weekend DJ.

During DJ Master T’s twenty-two year military tenure, he continued to hone his deejay skill playing at numerous military clubs, wedding receptions, cabarets, and private parties at such military bases as Quantico Marine Base, Fort Belvoir, Andrews Air Force Base, and Bolling Air Force Base.  In 1986, he landed a gig at Utopia Nightclub located in Landover, MD, one of the largest nightclubs in the metro DC area which lasted for eight years.

He was making the music circuit fast.  No longer a stranger to high profile clubs in the metro area, DJ Master T’s rhythmic artistry was sought after for his infectious musical beats as he frequented Zanzibar, the Tradewinds, Fox Trap, PJ’s, the Classic’s, and the Silver Shadows Nightclub.  In 1994, he was chosen as the “DJ of Choice” by the Gentleman of Metro cabarets and, to date, still serves as their top DJ.  Moreover, that same year, he accepted the position as position as Head DJ and Sound/Light technician at Baystreet Nightclub where he worked until March 2020 completing a total of 25 years at this location.

The list of engagements and entertainment venues are long and noteworthy, from week-long Carnival cruises hosted by the KIQ Social Club to pumping up the beat for the DC Chapter of Blacks in Government, major financial institutions, and universities.

Whether playing Rhythm & Blues, House, Jazz, Hand/ Line Dance, Top 40, Rock, Soca, Reggae, Afro Beats, or Go-Go, it’s no wonder that DJ Master T is certainly one of DC, Maryland, and Virginia’s premier deejays and a crowd favorite.  His musical knowledge is vast.  His style?  Energetic and soul stirring.  He is an enviable pied piper of musical mixes that arouses the “rock with you all night long” senses of an eclectic audience.  His strings of colorful, melodic rhythms are truly addictive.

Feet, be warned:   He is the “Master” . . .
